African Impact

About African Impact

For over 15 years, African Impact has been operating volunteer projects, internships, and study abroad programs in 10 countries across Africa.

We believe in the philosophy of “giving a hand up, not a hand out”. This means we work with communities to identify their needs and offer support through volunteer assistance and, in some cases, donations and fundraising from our charity organization, the African Impact Foundation.

We help create a strong foundation by empowering individuals and communities to be self-sustaining and then slowly withdraw support and move on to other initiatives and projects. This ensures they are able to support their families, pursue their dreams, and develop their countries without being dependent on aid.

Our mission is to create long-lasting change and shape our volunteers and students into global citizens who understand the unique political, social, economic, and cultural landscapes of the countries they work in and how humanitarian issues such as inequality, poverty, and violence are created in the first place. We believe that understanding the past and respecting deep-seated cultural values of communities is essential to creating a better future.

Our organizations and partners:

Our projects are developed hand in hand with local communities and we work in collaboration with local NGOs, schools, hospitals, clinics, women’s groups, and organizations across the continent to ensure the work we do meets the needs of the communities and contributes to long term, sustainable change.

Reviews

Student Volunteer

June 2019 - June 2019 St Lucia, KwaZulu-Natal
“I loved how open the African Impact staff was to getting to know the student volunteers' backgrounds and interest in volunteer work in South Africa. I loved interacting with the local community that we completed projects in. I was excited to also get to the know the families AI had close relationships with and to learn about our roles in the community. The personal connections with the younger children was impactful because many of them described how hard they work in school in order to go to college. ”

Healthcare and Medical Volunteer

June 2019 - July 2019 Livingstone, Southern Province
“I loved this experience because I was able to attain a great experience in the medical field and learn about global healthcare while learning and connecting with a different culture. ”
