I loved how open the African Impact staff was to getting to know the student volunteers' backgrounds and interest in volunteer work in South Africa. I loved interacting with the local community that we completed projects in. I was excited to also get to the know the families AI had close relationships with and to learn about our roles in the community. The personal connections with the younger children was impactful because many of them described how hard they work in school in order to go to college.
What I wish was different
I wish I would have had more experience in learning the Zulu language; the language barrier was difficult, but we learned how to work through it.
Advice
Always ask questions! Get to know the staff you are working with and ask about their backgrounds.

What I liked
I loved this experience because I was able to attain a great experience in the medical field and learn about global healthcare while learning and connecting with a different culture.
