BOCA Group

Engineering Intern

June - August 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The work environment at BOCA makes me feel important and helps me be productive. I had the freedom to work on projects and plenty of opportunities to provide input on how to tackle an issue or change something. At BOCA, I was comfortable with sharing my opinion on how something was done and felt that my opinions were valued. I really liked how I was able to talk with actual engineers in the field, and accompany them on walkthroughs and field visits. I never felt like I was just doing "busy-work" or work that didn't really matter. One of the projects I worked on is still being used at the company today, which really makes me feel like my time there was valued. I also really enjoyed the final presentation where I got to sum up everything I did over the summer and show off what I had learned.

What I wish was different

I had joined the BOCA Team at an unusual time. It was right when NYC was starting to partially reopen. So, there were few people in the office and I occasionally worked from home. I wish I had gotten to know everyone that summer, but I am still grateful I got to be there during the circumstances. I worked there over my winter break, and now much more people are in the office.

Advice

One thing I would note is that BOCA Group is not a work-from-home company. They expect you to be there in the office. However, interns can take Friday's off which is definitely nice for students who aren't used to commuting into the city. I would recommend getting yourself used to working with Microsoft Office and wireframes in AutoCAD. I learned so much about Microsoft Office from working at BOCA Group, but some background knowledge on how to use the programs would definitely be helpful since you'll use it everyday. I didn't have any background knowledge of AutoCAD, so it made navigating drawings a little difficult.
