Advice

To treat residents like a family member, and to remember that even with their age, and Alzheimer’s and dementia they are still human and have rights.

CNA

December 2017 • Middleton, WI

What I liked

I love working in a small care facility as a CNA. Being able to care for such a vulnerable population at a critical level has made the job so meaningful and priceless. I was able to take a course in order to administer medications at this facility. It was amazing to be able to take on this role of responsibility and now I am able to apply this knowledge to my school in pharmacology courses and the clinical setting.

What I wish was different

I honestly just wish that I could have worked there longer. Being able to care for such a vulnerable population at a critical level has made the job so meaningful and priceless. It has been so hard to leave a group of people that I was able to spend almost every day caring for.

Advice

I would advise anyone wanting to work as a nurse or in any patient-care setting to work as a CNA or PCA beforehand. The skills, critical thinking, and ability to communicate with new people that came with being a CNA are things I would not be able to learn anywhere else.
