Cleveland Clinic

Nurse Associate Extern

May - August 2019 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

I loved the hands-on experience that I got. The preceptors that I had were amazing and truly wanted me to learn and took the time to teach me.

What I wish was different

I wish they had offered affordable housing for those that weren't from Ohio

Advice

Start looking early for internships. The deadlines approach quickly

Undergraduate Counselor

June - August 2019 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

My work environment: each person was a support to one another throughout the summer.

What I wish was different

I wish that the experience was longer, although I do understand it was only a summer internship.

Advice

The Summer Treatment Program for Children and Adolescents with ADHD is intense, and some days you may want to throw in the towel, but is the most rewarding life experience you could imagine.

College Volunteer

June - August 2019 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

I loved to be able to assist caregivers in giving patients the best care possible.

What I wish was different

Advice

As a volunteer, you are helping the lives of patients or their family who came to visit this hospital (main campus) from all over the world. As I volunteered in an ICU, it can be really frustrating and downhearted to go through as a family member to the patient. That was the primary reason why I motivated myself to make sure that I could make their visit as pleasant as possible. We all go through rough times, so it is imperative that we all stick up for each other!

General Surgery team member

June - July 2019 • Chagrin Falls, OH

What I liked

I lover working Dr. John Jasper, a board certified General surgeon employed by UH who is tied to hospitals accords Ohio. He was kind enough to allow me to work on his team with his resident transporting patients for surgery, taking histories and physical exams, and being present in the OR for all operating procedures and learning on the spot. This included over 30 surgeries that ranged from appendectomies, hernia removal, laparotomies, and even one emergency removal of necrotized bowel that required complete abominable opening that took over 8 hours to complete. While being present for all of these surgeries, I was taught basic surgical procedures and proper etiquette in both operating room and patient rooms. After all of this, I developed a love for the field of general surgery while moving from hospital from hospital 5 days a week from 7 AM to 7 or even 8 PM in the afternoon! I developed many relationships with people employed with Dr. Jasper and will be returning next summer, hopefully for a longer stay.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have gotten to witness more surgeries, which would’ve allowed me to learn more about the basic techniques and human anatomy. I also wish I would have extended my stay with Dr. Jasper longer but classes at CSU only allowed me to shadow for about a month and a half.

Advice

If any students are interested or proceeding through the pre-medical route and are currently in school and show an interest, I would highly suggest partaking in these shadowing opportunities. One cannot fully understand the lifestyle and career in medicine without witnessing it first hand and I promise it will cement your wishes to go into medicine and make you work harder towards that goal. Pre-med is a long route, a lonely route, and a scary route, and developing relationships with people in the profession will help you in the long run going forward. Medicine is a noble profession that focuses a lot on the humanity of a person. If you can take advantage of opportunities like these, it will develop you into a better doctor in the future.

Student volunteer

May - July 2019 • Strongsville, OH

What I liked

I really enjoyed seeing how orthopedic outpatient physical therapy was practiced. It was a busy yet very functional gym that entailed motives of health and rehabilitation.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been able to assist with patient care and be more hands on but since I am an undergraduate volunteer that is not allowed.

Advice

Try to ask as many questions as you can and absorb all the information coming at you. Also, try to apply what you are learning in school with your real world observations.

Patient care nursing assistant

May 2019 • Mayfield, OH

What I liked

The work I was doing to help others, especially in such a time of need.

What I wish was different

The Cleveland Clinic culture that demands for you to “be Cleveland Clinic” or leave, it’s not very welcoming or accepting. This mindset certainly doesn’t breed individuality, productivity, change, or dynamic growth.

Advice

Understand that Cleveland Clinic is a rigid global front-runner for now, so they expect people to adhere to their strict expectation of what you are to be. This will lead to their fall into mediocrity if they don’t change their mindset.

Nurse Associate Extern

May - August 2019 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

I learned so much information about patient care and interaction. However, the most valuable thing I learned from my externship is my ability to think critically like a nurse. A majority of my coworkers were not only eager to help, but they were eager to teach me and provide me with new experiences.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more time with my internship. I learned far more in one summer than I have in this past year of nursing school.

Advice

I highly recommend anyone considering a career in nursing to apply for an externship position at the Cleveland Clinic. The experiences that I have gained and the connections I was able to make are invaluable.

Camp Counselor

June - August 2019 • Cleveland, OH

What I liked

I loved working with the children that go through the Student Treatment Program (STP). They are truly one of a kind kids and I love working closely with their parents. I also love the coworkers I get to spend every day with. This was my second year at STP, and I found this program extremely rewarding.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish was different was the area it was in. I think it would've been more efficient if there was more rooms and buildings to spread out the kids evenly.

Advice

Treat every day a different day and enjoy it the best you can. The summer goes by extremely fast and before you know it, summer's already ended.
