Deer Valley Resort

Food and Beverage Intern

December 2020 - April 2021 • Park City, UT

What I liked

The best part of the internship was meeting all of the people I worked with and being in a different environment. The staff is extremely supportive of you.

What I wish was different

I'm sure COVID played a big role in this, but I had let my managers know what I wanted to learn during my time with Deer Valley, and as much as I loved my supervisors, almost nothing I was hoping to learn got touched on. The internship was having me work in two positions in the food and beverage department and that was it. I know that my mangers were under lots of stress with constant changes going on with COVID, but I was still hired as an intern with an expectation that I was going to learn more managerial tasks, and I did not get that experience or knowledge.

Advice

Make sure that your supervisors are actively making sure that they are focusing on the points that you want to highlight in your internship. Also, plan out your transportation and housing well in advance!

cook

June - September 2019 • Park City, UT

What I liked

The people were so much fun to work with and the surrounds were just beautiful. There was so much to learn at work and tons of fun stuff to do on the weekends.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have stayed.

Advice

I didn’t need schooling to do the thing I loved. Make sure that you’re getting an education in the areas you need to, to better your future and save some money. That being said, I’m glad I went to school, I just wish it was in a more applicable area.

Day Restaurant Assistant Manager

December 2018 - April 2019 • Park City, UT

What I liked

I got paid really well and had the opportunity to try something new. If you like to ski you do get to enjoy free skiing for yourself and friends and family. It was a great opportunity and I enjoyed being recognized for my hard work.

What I wish was different

I wish I was more firm on what I needed to learn. Looking for jobs post-grad the things i should of learned are the reason i am not being hired.

Advice

If you can stay out of employee housing DO IT. You have to share a hotel room with up to 8 other people with no care what you have in common with them, and the kitchen just a tiny mini fridge and microwave. Even the best housing opportunity you are squeezed into 400 sq ft with three other people.
