DICK'S Sporting Goods, Inc.

UX Design Intern

June - August 2019 • Pittsburgh, PA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the design culture at DICK'S. I worked on a balanced product team with a PM and engineers, and they trusted and relied on us UX Designers to research and create designs that were best for users. I felt like my design decisions were valued and important in shaping our team's product.

What I wish was different

We completed an intern project alongside working with our regular teams, which was a great experience, but I wish the intern project I worked on was a little more organized, as all the interns had different schedules and expectations on how much work to put into the side project.

Advice

Make sure you have a car there or get close to someone with a car so you can explore more of downtown and don't get holed up in your room.

Retail Sales Management Intern

May - August 2021 • Redding, CA

What I liked

The internship had a very relaxed pace. We worked on what we didn't know on our own timeline. I got plenty of managerial experience and expertise. Everybody was nice and caring and welcomed me with open arms, since I was in a new location.

What I wish was different

I was apart of the pilot program for this internship which meant it was there first year doing this exact one. This meant that we had to work through some holes and problems. Our mentors for this program were people who had never worked in a store setting before, and the whole basis of the internship was to get managerial experience in a store, so that made this process a little difficult.

Advice

Don't stress about the small stuff. At times it seemed like I had nothing to do, so I gave myself things to do. I think that this showed my initiative and helped my relationships with the current managerial staff.

Cashier

June - August 2019 • Saratoga Springs, NY

What I liked

From my time at DICK'S, I enjoyed working with my co-workers the most. They were all overall a very friendly and welcoming bunch that made my time at work enjoyable.

What I wish was different

Only major nitpick was that I wish I was able to refuse expired coupons, they do have a date on them for a reason.

Advice

There isn't really too much advice that I can give, outside be prepared from some crabby customers, as you seem to get a few every shift, which to be fair is pretty typical of retail work in general.

Merchandising Intern

May - August 2017 • Coraopolis, PA

What I liked

In my experience with Dick's Sporting Goods this summer, I completed work that was truly important for my team, my department, and the company. It was used to make business decisions and I was an active member in decision making and strategizing. I was given the opportunity to explore my interests, as well as participate in executive speaker series, on-site training, and leadership development. In addition, the summer was extremely fun due to the many social events that the University Relations team arranged as well as the connections I made with the other interns.

What I wish was different

There is nothing that I would change about this experience. It was the best internship experience I have had and I am ecstatic to have accepted a full time offer with the company.

Advice

I would recommend to consistently ask for ways to improve and verbalize your ideas and findings. Dick's Sporting Goods highly values input from its interns because they are part of a demographic that they are interested in targeting.

Footwear Associate

May - August 2018 • Puyallup, WA

What I liked

What’s great about working at Dick’s Sporting Goods is the adaptable environment with a unique diverse working crew. Both complimented each other in helping out each department, as well as footwear. Another thing I liked about about working footwear at Dick’s Sporting Goods is how fast you learns the products. I came in with little shoe knowledge on selling their product. Leaving there, I know way more than I did before. For instance, the difference in stability and neutral shoes.

What I wish was different

One thing I wish was that was done different is the training. This was an entry level job and most of the footwear knowledge you had to learn on the flow of things. I wish they gave us explicit training and more practice on how shoes are named, more information on stability & neutral shoes, how a shoe is made, insoles, and more.

Advice

A simple piece of advice I would give about this job, or any salesmen job, is to know the language. Knowing the “footwear” language makes you a better sales associate because you know what your talking about, and your knowledge is confident and back up. It makes it easier to sell because customers assume you are highly knowledgeable about shoes when you use certain vocabulary. For example, over-pronation, plantar fasciitis, mid sole, arch type, gait analysis, and many more.
