GT Metabolic Solutions

R&D Intern

March 2021 • Fridley, MN

What I liked

I liked the ability to manage various different yet equally important and stimulating projects, while learning not only skills of an engineer, but learning how and why things work the way that they do in the medical device industry. There is a monumental amount of work that goes into the medical devices that make an impact on people that benefit from their use and this internship has shown me that the things that happen behind the curtain are surprising and exciting, all at once. I appreciated the confidence that my employer gave me in completing projects with no micromanaging or lack of trust in my abilities. At the same time, there was no pressure to be perfect 100% of the time, and a helping/guiding hand was always at the ready when I needed it, further propelling my confidence in carrying out projects. I felt like I was learning new skills and abilities everyday under the supervision of an expert in the industry.

What I wish was different

On one hand, I came to find that the flexibility that I enjoyed, also came to annoy me on some occasions. With advancement in the company's projects happening so fast, some weeks I never knew what to expect when coming through the doors. Sometimes it's nice to know exactly what your day is going to entail and with the nature of the company in its early stages, that wasn't always the case for this position. But that ultimately comes down to my personality and the way that I operate, it's not a dig at the company or the position.

Advice

I would say that anyone looking for this position or a position like this in their future, should not be afraid to be outgoing and be alright with making mistakes, as long as you are sincere and hardworking in your tasks. My boss Todd always said, "Hurry up and make your mistakes right away, so that we can learn from it and get down to business.". I think that sentiment rings true for most employers, and that recent alums or current students should not bear the burden of worrying about their mistakes. Just make your mistake and move on to the next one!

Quality/Regulatory Intern

What I liked

The hours are incredibly flexible, and Mr. Krinke gives priority to school. The office environment is very laid back, but the work you are doing is important. It has been a very comfortable learning space, and I've always felt supported

What I wish was different

There isn't much that I would change--I'm still here and would recommend this position to anyone who comes across it.

Advice

This is a job like no other. This can be the launching of your career in Med Device. GT Metabolic Solutions is at this point a startup with a potential value of $1 Billion. You are working and learning from pioneers in medicine and engineering (which also comes with excellent connections). Since the company is so young there is the potential to receive a Full-Time offer to stay on with the company once your schooling is done. I've enjoyed what a wonderful learning and growing experience this has been. Apply--you won't regret taking the chance.
