Closing Manager

January - October 2019 • Logan, UT

What I liked

I enjoyed working with customers and being available for fellow associates to train and answer questions. I liked learning new tasks such as jewelry, closing, cash room, and security systems.

What I wish was different

The main store manager was not very trusting of the employees and held too high of expectations for positions.

Advice

You get what you give into it. Had I not been willing to learn and step up to the plate, I would have stayed as just a sales associate. I chose to apply myself and become a manager

What I liked

I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the work environment and my coworkers. It wasn't a very stressful job most of the times. It was indoors and air-conditioned. My coworkers made working there feel enjoyable and sometimes even fulfilling. Some customers were quite nice. I work there seasonally and part-time so it is a nice job to pick up and make some spare cash when not worrying about school.

What I wish was different

I wish that the store was renewed. The computers are ancient and frequently break. The floors and carpets are worn and stained in some areas. The lights seem a bit dim and a few of them flicker. The equipment is rather old and worn, specifically the racks. I also wish that we were also better staffed. We definitely needed more people working at the cash register. And a little pay raise wouldn't hurt.

Advice

If you do your job it will be a lot easier for you. Knowing where things are will make customers happy and doing your job will make the management happy. Outside of that, it's a piece of cake.

What I liked

I liked the very relaxed and laid back atmosphere. The work is easy and the people I worked with made it fun.

What I wish was different

I worked part time and I did tell my boss that I was free pretty much everyday, but she took that to mean that I could work almost to full time. I did have a few days of training but after I was just thrown in head first. Going from not working in over a year to working eight hour shifts was a little jarring at first.

Advice

Make sure to show up on time, don't complain, and be professional. If you show that you care and respect their time (employees and customers), they will respect you. When applying for the job, I had to wait two weeks before they got back to me and I missed their call to schedule an interview. I called them back and when that didn't work and I came in person to sort things out. They like that because it shows that you actually care about the job. I had the interview right then and there and got the job.

What I liked

I enjoyed my fellow employers. They made the job fun and bearable at times. I still keep in contact with them. Although I was hired as a cashier I was more of a sales assosiate and cashier. I was allowed to work in all of the clothing departments with different employees and managers. Due to the fact that I was a returning worker that had formed a solid reputation with my bosses, I was given the opportunity and task of training new employees. I enjoyed this experience immensely.

What I wish was different

Every so often a manager or two would conflict with one another in what they desired for the individual employees to work on.

Learn to be flexible while having a bright smile in the midst of customers that may be tempermental and upset.
