What I liked

I enjoyed the constant test of focus and learning throughout the research experience. I was able to use my current knowledge and new knowledge to piece together information into a working literature review.

What I wish was different

I do wish the communication had been better. There were difficulties between the staff as well as between the staff and scholars.

Advice

Go in with an open mind!! There are tons of topics that we cover in seminars and meetings about the future and life itself. What's worth more than the stipend you get at the end of the month is the people you meet and the experience you obtained from your hard work.

What I liked

Completed a 12 week full time research project with a faculty member on a subject I was passionate about.

What I wish was different

If it weren't for COVID, I would have done this project in person and would have lived on campus. Additionally I would have been paid to do it.

Advice

Research is key for those going into academia, and being a published researcher before getting into grad school will look great on your application.

What I liked

The exposure this program gave me to research. I have been debating whether research is for me or not, trying to understand the path I want to take for my future for a long time now. The Summer Undergraduate Research Program gave me a chance to put my foot forward in this field and experience it.

What I wish was different

Everything was remote. (Given the circumstances, it is understandable) but the true essence of working in scientific research biology comes from working in the lab which I did not get to. At all. I wish I was called over at least once or twice to see the research I was working on and learning for.

Advice

Its great but it depends on you to make the most of it. I wish I had been more active or communicative with my mentors. I have been trying to juggle things since the semester started but you don't have to juggle things over summer, you don't have 18 credits to be after. So, use that time to build your connections and network with your mentors and more

What I liked

Working with Kent State's Institutional Advancement department provided me with the opportunity to both learn more about the University as well as to advance my own skill and understanding of web dev. with regards to grassroots fundraising.

What I wish was different

Everything at Advancement was phenomenal! I acquired so much knowledge. Every skill I have acquired has been a result of learning either on the job or at home on a project.

Advice

If you have a passion for digital campaigning, grassroots fundraising and/or advancing the University's message, the advancement communications team is one of the greatest environments in Kent.

What I liked

It was a full time exposre to collegiate strength and conditioning. You lived in the weight room and got to learn everything that goes into the strength and conditioning profession.

What I wish was different

Just being more aware of the time commitment.

Advice

A true strength and conditioning internship is a full time job. It takes a lot of time. If you're interested in this field, make the commitment for a couple months and learn and grow, it's only a couple months if you hate it.

Make the most of out this experience, gain as many skills as possible, and share your research with whoever will listen! Lots of opportunities to network and find yourself another research opportunity, internship, job, or graduate school connections.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

What I liked

I have enjoyed the overall research components going into the biological aspects for neuroscience in regards to anthropology. I have been working under a Ph.D. student to better understand the amygdala and other areas of the brain that I did not know previously about. Next semester, I am involving myself further with the brain and am working under a Post-Doc to gather more knowledge on smaller areas in relation to Parkinson's and AD. I love my experiences and cannot wait to have more.

What I wish was different

I do wish I had the opportunity or time to come up with a research proposal I could have started in this lab, but I am okay with waiting on doing my own research until this upcoming summer term.

Advice

One piece of advice I would give would be to always make yourself available--as much as you can. Showing your devotion to the internship and the lab is a great way to gather attention from a department and let them know you're serious about the work, paid or unpaid. I would also say to ask questions because you can become easily lost if you're not consistently involving yourself with up-to-date lab meetings and recent publications.
