Keystone Camp

Logistics Coordinator

May - August 2020 • Brevard, NC

What I liked

The Keystone administrative staff is a collection of some of the kindest and most driven professionals in the summer camp industry. Admin know that being a counselor and serving in loco parentis can be an incredibly demanding job, and make sure to support their staff both during the summer and after. They make sure to develop personal and professional relationships with all of their staff, checking in with them each week to make sure they're getting the support that they need in the ways that they need it. They also care deeply about your professional development, asking you what skills you want to develop and figuring out the best role for you.

What I wish was different

This past summer I worked through the COVID-19 pandemic, and we were one of the only camps in the area who decided to operate. Because of the pandemic, close interactions among different groups of campers and staff was partially limited, but that was unavoidable this season.

Advice

Ask for help when you need it. Staff is there to support you.

What I liked

Keystone Camp is a wonderful place to work at during the summers. As cliche as it sounds, you will immensely grow as an individual and develop long-lasting relationships in a supportive and caring environment.

What I wish was different

Working at Keystone camp was first official camp and counselor experience and I wish I had discovered Keystone earlier in my life and career.

Advice

Don't be afraid to be yourself and get silly with the kids! Just have fun with it!

What I liked

Living and working at Keystone Camp over the summer was a positive experience. It is a supportive environment and the administration and staff are incredible. You learn so much and are able to influence young girls. I loved it!!

What I wish was different

I worked there in the summer of COVID. This presented extra challenges (that the camp as a whole handled extremely well). Though I wish, like everyone else, that COVID wasn't a factor, the summer was still great.

Advice

Go in open-minded. You're going to work with a lot of different people and may have some challenges. As long as you remain respectful you will be in the clear.

Keystone is an incredible place to build confidence, relationships, and flexibility skills that can carry you through life. It may not be an internship, but it teaches you more skills than most internships. There is nothing more important than learning how to be empathetic and adaptable prior to joining the workforce.
