Kohl's Department Stores

Sales Floor Associate

July 2021 - August 2022 • Plainfield, IN

What I liked

I liked engaging with and helping customers find what they need and making their experience as rewarding as possible.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been more involved with the registers. I was terrified of them for the longest time and constantly messing up. But practice makes perfect, so I should have embraced them instead of avoiding them.

Advice

Take all the chances you get to learn more about the store. You will get more hours if you can do more than one thing.

Store Management Intern

June - July 2020 • Fresno, CA

What I liked

During this internship, I developed leadership skills that I was not aware of before. This internship was also extremely helpful in figuring out if a management position was right for me. That's one of the great things about any internship; you get to discover different careers and see if that career was the right fit for you!

What I wish was different

Personally, I wish I had more interns with me or that other students were aware of this opportunity. In my internship, I was the only intern in my department so it felt a little isolating at times. Having another college intern with me would have been beneficial.

Advice

If you are unsure of what career to go into, an internship is a great opportunity to discover yourself! Try your hardest to participate in at least one internship throughout your college career! It's better to find out now that you don't like a certain career, rather than later when it is more difficult to get out of it. Even if the internship didn't go as you planned, you will definitely leave with newfound skills and knowledge. Internships are the way to go!

Store Management Intern

June - August 2019 • Menifee, CA

What I liked

I enjoyed having a wide variety of tasks to keep me busy each day. It was exciting to learn every process in the store, from unloading shipments in the early hours of the morning to locking the doors up at night. I was trusted with a lot of information about the stores and how they run, and I was able to get involved in meetings with management that gave me great insight into what a future with Kohl's would look like.

What I wish was different

While I enjoyed the random scheduling for the 8-week internship, I think it would be frustrating had I chosen to accept a job offer with the company. There were times that I felt like just an extra set of hands to help out around the store and it was difficult to step into a management role given that most employees did not understand why I was present. Most of them had worked at the store anywhere from 1-10+ years, so I learned more from them than they did from me most days.

Advice

If you love doing something different every day, this is a wonderful experience and potentially a great career. I just did not see myself continuing the Kohl's lifestyle long-term. This job keeps you on your feet and you learn so much. If you've worked in retail before, you could probably get a lot more out of it than if you hadn't. I had no prior retail experience, so I spent a lot of time learning the basics of department stores before I really got to take off on my own.

Sales Associate

August 2019 • Sun Valley, CA

What I liked

I like that some of the people I work with also go to CSUN.

What I wish was different

I wish that the training were more thorough. There are times where we don't know something because it was never covered in training and the managers get upset because we don't know. I just don't understand why they get upset when we genuinely don't know.

Advice

Don't take the harsh criticism too personally. They're trying to run a business and they're doing what they can.

Sales Management Intern

June - July 2019 • Old Bridge, NJ

What I liked

I liked being able to be in a different position other than a sales associate. I was able to go to a different store and learn more about the management side and in the end, I was able to bring back information to my original store on how we could do things differently and make them better.

What I wish was different

I wish it was longer, eight weeks for an internship of this magnitude where there are so many employees and so many different departments, it was a little overwhelming if you have never worked in a Kohl's store before.

Advice

If you want to be on your feet for eight hours a day and to also support employees while working alongside them, and to learn how a huge company runs, then this is the internship for you!

Advice

Get a job; no matter how small or unimportant it is; no matter how much you're paid. It will increase your revenue, improve your resume, and give you experience, which may not be immediately applicable, but will definitely be helpful in some way.

Store Management Intern

June - July 2019 • Grove City, OH

What I liked

I liked how the company is pushing towards growth and change. They are trying to keep current and show interest in your opinions. I felt as if I had a voice and I was taken seriously.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship itself would have been longer. I feel like I did not have enough time at the store to apply my knowledge and wish I could have been there for two more weeks.

Advice

Own your training, ask questions often and seek to learn and grow. This can be weeks filled with knowledge that will set you up perfectly for a future career.

Management Intern

June - August 2019 • Chico, CA

What I liked

I learned SO much throughout this experience! The biggest take-away I got from this internship was leadership development. My experience with Kohl's definitely changed who I am as a leader, and what values I have as a leader. I felt totally supported during my internship and am very excited to see where my career with Kohl's takes me!

What I wish was different

Retail management in and of itself is just a difficult world to maneuver especially with no experience! But I never felt like I was on my own, I always had someone to support me throughout my internship.

Advice

Go into this experience with a positive attitude, the willingness to learn, and ability to take initiative! I definitely feel that is what made me successful with this company.

What I liked

I loved how willing everyone was to help me! The management team was incredible and I learned so much. The associates accepted us interns as managers and were so kind.

What I wish was different

There were times that not every manager was on the same page, which made it difficult sometimes knowing what I was supposed to do, but once we sat down and talked about it, they fixed it right away!

Advice

Be willing to ask questions and take initiative on projects!!
