Cashier

June 2019 • Orchard Park, NY

What I liked

This job was easy to learn. Halfway through my second day of training, I was able to do the job on my own completely. Co-workers were always very friendly and helpful towards other employees. The location was great because there was a steady influx of customers throughout every shift, meaning there weren't any massive crowds or super slow times.

What I wish was different

I had a difficult time when it came to taking time off. When it came time for me to return to school, I told the manager in charge of scheduling three weeks in advance that I would be going back to school. Then, when I went back to school, which is at least an hour away from the location, I was still getting calls from management asking me to come in last minute to work or wondering why I didn't show up to my shift. I had to talk to three or four separate managers to explain to them I could not work because I physically was not in the area. I wish this would have been an easier process.

Advice

I would say don't expect to get good hours right away. This job would give me 4-8 hours a week for the first three weeks then I immediately went to 20 hours. This was nice when it came to learning the job, however, it was a little bit annoying when it came to my bank account. Otherwise, be friendly to all the employees and have patience when it comes to customers and their coupons.

Kohls Management Summer Internship

June - August 2019 • Marina, CA

What I liked

I loved the environment. My Store Manager was really helpful and understood that I was an intern looking to learn.

What I wish was different

I wish there was another intern at my store. Usually there is up to two or three interns but in my occasion I was the only one.

Advice

Go in with an open mind. I never though retail would be something I enjoyed but this internship is much more than just cashiering or fixing the firing rooms. You are learning how to run an entire store and business. I loved that I was exposed to different levels of management. There was a lot of hats I had to put on since you're learning a lot of new things such as merchandising, omni process and supply chain management.
