I loved the culture; the people at Kohl's are truly great. I also love that the work and projects I was doing were truly making an impact on business. I also liked the ability to take classes and learn about other parts of the company if I was interested.

What I wish was different

I would have structured the timing of classes and projects a little bit differently.

Advice

Don't be afraid to make your voice heard! It can be difficult to speak up in meetings early on, but I would totally encourage you to.

What I liked

Great hands on experience in managing a team. Learning how to merchandise and daily functions of a large volume retail store. Working during peak periods including back to school.

What I wish was different

I wish they would have been more clear upfront that after this internship relocation within the west coast region was a part of the next position and as an assistant store manager.

Advice

Going from working fot the school to working for a large retailer is a very different environment. Research what could come and be expected of you after the internship so you know if you are potentially moving in a direction you don't want.

It’s important to work as much as you can during the summer because when the fall semester rolls around you never know what you’ll need to pay for.

Kohls offered a great employee discount around the holiday and hours were always available. Co-workers were always willing to trade shifts as well.

What I wish was different

I wish that the store would have been more flexible with my school schedule.

Advice

Be prepared to work a lot around the holidays, and long store hours.

What I liked

The other intern and I were given so much freedom and responsibility. Very different from other internships I've had or heard about. I liked that we were kind of thrown into action and got to learn a lot by doing, and through our own ideas rather than the norm. Every time I asked a question, the first answer I got was "what do you think we should do?" and I loved that.

What I wish was different

I don't think retail was for me. We were also sent to another location for a week during the heart of our department assignments, and it was difficult to manage our departments while working in another store, though I think that was the point.

Advice

Make it your own. The store gives you a lot of freedom compared to the other managers in terms of what you can change in your area. If you have a big idea, it could pay off big and change the whole store.

My coworkers were very nice and they offered plenty of hours that worked with my school schedule.

What I wish was different

Working late nights during seasonal (midnight closing but we often stayed later) interfered with my sleep schedule and the pressure to open credit cards was too much.
