Mika Metal Fabricating

Mechanical Engineering Intern

May - August 2024 • Willoughby, OH

What I liked

I spent a lot of the summer working on the shop floor, so I gained a lot of hands-on experience manufacturing sheet metal. Everyone who worked on the floor was very friendly and helpful and the supervisors were patient when teaching me new skills.

What I wish was different

I overall had a great experience and don't wish anything would have been different.

Advice

One piece of advice i would give is to be open to learning from everyone and giving things a try on your own. I learned so much by having someone show me how it was done and then just giving it a try on my own even if I wasn't 100% confident more often than not I knew more than I thought I did and learned so much by trying to figure things out.

Manufacturing Engineering Intern

March 2021 - April 2022 • Willoughby, OH

What I liked

I always loved the idea of being able to create. People at Mika Metal are very proud of their work and this is inspiring. At Mika I was exposed to the entire process of a sheet metal fabricating, both engineering and non-engineering aspects. I was given ample training and first and also groomed along the way. It was a great opportunity to experience the issues faced in real manufacturing set up and how to resolve those problems. Working with integrity, sense of greater good and maintaining a family like atmosphere, Mika is a great place to work at!

Marketing

What I liked

I like working at Mika Metal Fabricating because they are a small business and a great place to start due to me just graduating. It is very family oriented. I get to know everybody I work with. They are organized when coming to planning and managing projects. Also, it feels great to have your bosses care about you. Mika Metal has company quarterly meetings with all the employees to update us on what is happening throughout the shop. They feed us well! I have flexible hours to work from home and do all my work as a marketer.

What I wish was different

I wish for nothing different! I love working here.

Advice

I can share that do not be ashamed not to learn as quickly as others; someone here will help and guide you. I never felt left behind. The company always keeps me involved. There is so much growth and experience you can get from here. I have only been here for four months and have learned a lot.

Associate manufacturing engineer

May 2021 • Willoughby, OH

What I liked

I enjoyed being in the shop and learning about sheet metal processing and fabrication with the different machines. Working with a small group knowing everyone's name and having a work family.

What I wish was different

I wish that the company had a different PTO policy that gives benefits prior to a year of service with the company and that the company used the current tax write offs to help pay student loans for employees.

Advice

Working with a small company, it means that there aren't many opportunities for growth as there is for a larger corporation. Which may translate to being in a position longer while waiting for a vacancy to open in your preferred field.
