Mosholu Montefiore Community Center

Program Assistant

January 2023 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I was able to develop communicative, counseling and social skills that are applicable for any professional setting. Through working within an after-school program, I designed extracurricular activities and team building exercises that encouraged our students to be active! I enjoyed having the freedom to exhibit my strengths as an employee through lesson planning and was inspired through the relationships I’ve established with my group along the way. The networks created is definitely something I am grateful for and I received a promotion within 7 months!

What I wish was different

Many of the employees have a exterior obligations that often conflict with being available for the after-school program, which can lead to constant plan readjusting. Although our program is very understanding with adhering to the needs of their employees, late call outs or other activities that hinder having a group leader present can result in chaos. This program has an enriching schedule for our participants but a stricter protocol regarding staff readiness should be implemented.

Advice

When working with children, patience and active listening are essential to establishing a rapport with them. They want to feel heard and express themselves but often don’t feel comfortable enough sharing information with others. Finding ways to connect to each student uniquely, avoiding favoritism and being a facilitator of positive energy when mitigating relationships will help in the process of being an after school counselor.
