Caster Project Engineer - Mechanical Maintenance

What I liked

Project engineers at NAS stay busy defining and managing projects, communicating with contractors and suppliers, and getting quotes. You have some independence; getting to own your projects, and can be as hands-on or -off as you want. What is great about NAS is the number of employees who have been here for years, decades even. These employees are more than willing to share their knowledge with you, and usually are glad to help out if needed.

What I wish was different

New-hire training could have been more focused on the specific mill/mills you will be responsible for. And since everyone is so busy, it can be challenging at times-especially when new-to get direction from superiors.

Advice

If things get slow, do not hesitate to ask around; someone may have a project idea or a project that needs getting done.

Mechanical Cold Roll Maintenance Co-op

What I liked

A lot of freedom on projects that let me fully utilize and develop my engineering skills.

What I wish was different

A little more structure could have definitely helped the co-op, the first couple of weeks was slightly disorienting all things considered.

Advice

Have fun and make good connections. You are the deciding factor on what you can get out of this experience.

Helpdesk Operator Co-op

What I liked

I really liked how welcoming and informational my co-workers were, I got to learn a lot with the interactions we had together. I really enjoyed working in my area since I got to learn a lot in my area of interest.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish had been different was related to my job role. It was that sometimes the communication between some workers was a bit troublesome. We had to contact the worker's supervisors to contact them whenever we didn't hear back from them for a while. This made our job a little slower but still doable, a little better connection with them directly would be better.

Advice

If you like moving around a lot and getting to work on computer's then this is one of the best positions you can ask for.

Electrical Engineer Hot Mill Maintenance

What I liked

The interview process was pretty simple and relatively streamlined, which was nice in comparison to other employers that I interviewed with. I'm still currently employed by North American Stainless. My co-workers are excellent, both technically knowledgeable and eager to help me succeed.

What I wish was different

The new hire orientation, especially for engineers needs some work, but it is obvious that they are trying to improve the process.

Advice

North American Stainless can be pretty overwhelming at a glance. It is a massive factory that has and uses a variety of engineering disciplines. There is a lot of opportunity there if you are willing to give it a chance.
