Olivia's Gift - Full Circle Care

Direct Care Worker

April 2019 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

I've been at OG for just over 2 years now! I think that says something in itself, I love the community that OG has. One thing I really appreciate is how flexible my hours can be. If I have a busy semester, I am able to cut down on hours and vice versa for a lighter semester.

What I liked

Working at OG has been an amazing experience! I have learned so much and gotten lots of hands-on experience at this job. The training process made learning the residents' routines easier to understand and management does a great job checking in with you as you are still learning. The residents are all so fun to work with too!

What I liked

I seriously do not even know where to begin with what I like about this job. For starters, all of the managers are super caring and easily accessible at any point during the shift. They are constantly checking in with staff and asking for any kind of improvement or suggestions that will make caring for the residents run even more smoothly. They take staff's feedback very seriously. The managers really understand how intimidating providing care may be for some people, so they provide excellent on-the-job training. They are really good at making sure new hires are comfortable with all aspects of the job before working on their own. More importantly, the residents are AMAZING, and they all make it so easy to fall in love with coming to work. I actually owe a lot of my current career path to my experiences at OG. I originally was a nursing major, and I was drawn to this job because of how full of the opportunity it is. As a DCW, we have the privilege of passing medications, working with G/GJ tubes, learning how to provide basic care, and other aspects that are helpful to learn as future healthcare providers. After working here for about six months, I realized how much I enjoy working with this population and am currently working on applying to occupational therapy school, which is something I would have never considered had I not worked here! I seriously could not speak more highly of an organization (:

What I liked

The residents, the staff, the families make this job so rewarding! The schedule is flexible which is nice for students but beyond that, this job provides great hands on experience and gives you a new outlook on life. I have learned new skills that I will take with me in my nursing career such as passing meds, using g tubes, transfers, and assisting residents with their ADLs. This job is all about helping our friends use their abilities so that they can be as independent and well cared for as possible and it is an experience that I will never forget!

What I liked

This job is super rewarding. Being able to care of individuals who do not have the capabilities to do it themselves is something I never thought I would do. You also gain a relationship with the residents. They are the reason why I am happy to go into work.

Advice

Although this job is perfect for me, it might not be for everyone else. If you are looking into PT, OT, nursing, etc., I highly recommend applying. Also, just be yourself!

What I liked

Olivia's Gift is a welcoming and positive environment where I was able to learn and grow while working alongside others with similar goals. As a nursing student, this job offered me so many opportunities to expand my nursing skills including passing meds, working with G-tubes, taking care of a tracheostomy, and many more! Full circle care offers on-the-job training and makes sure you are comfortable with the care of the special individuals who live at Olivia's Gift.

What I liked

I liked the environment that the management team created. It is flexible hours and you are able to work hand-on with individuals with disabilities. I liked how there is a large range of needs that are met day-to-day and no day is ever the same. I liked participating in the “house sister” position they offer and be able to live rent-free.
