Red Lobster

Waiter

May - August 2019 • Williamsburg, VA

What I liked

My coworkers were great, they really cared about the work they were doing The traffic was always good, except for in between lunch and dinner, there was never really any downtime The company has excellent core values Great management

What I wish was different

I wish traffic was busy all year round, but the high traffic was mainly due to the summer tourist season

Advice

Pay attention to training and learn the menu in advance, it seems like a lot but you'll know it inside and out within a month

Server

March 2016 - September 2019 • Modesto, CA

What I liked

Accommodating with school schedule and very friendly coworkers. Busy restaurant and new customers come in with annual food promotions such as endless shrimp.

What I wish was different

Management would change consistently which made it hard getting schedules out in a timely manner.

Advice

Fast-paced environment to work and traffic can be difficult going from Modesto to Turlock if you have an evening class.

Waitress

January - June 2019 • Plano, TX

What I liked

I likes interacting with my coworkers and being able to talk to new people every day.

What I wish was different

I wish I wouldn't have worked as much as I did, I put too much pressure on myself.

Advice

Waitressing can be very stressful, but it can also be very rewarding. The income isn't always steady; the pay is $3.17 an hour + tips. So if you have a good day, you can potentially make more than $200, but on a bad day you may make only $20.

Waitress

April 2017 • Fort Walton Beach, FL

What I liked

I enjoyed interacting with guests, keeping my workspace clean, and the novelty of a job in the service industry. It teaches one respect, conscientiousness, and work ethic.

What I wish was different

Included gratuity in parties of large people, or requiring a single check for large parties. They take up a lot of time and a lot of work for the risk of not getting tipped for whatever reason the guest decides not to tip for.

Advice

Always keep a good attitude and be happy in everything that you do. People feed off of your vibes and we can all bring about a better place simply by keeping a better attitude. Fake it 'til you make it- it's a real thing.

Waiter

November 2014 - August 2019 • Lansdale, PA

What I liked

I loved my team that I worked with. When working in a restaurant, you are constantly working with others and helping one another, whether that be while serving a large party together or running another team member's food tray while they are taking a table's order. We have to work with the kitchen if someone orders a special food order and have to work with the bar in order to get our customer's bar drinks.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish was different is that there was an inconsistantcy of employees and management staff. People are constantly in and out of the chain restaurant business, so it was hard to have steady direction at points. Each new manager has to get used to the way our staff works, and vice versa, so sometimes it could arise in unnecessary altercations between the team.

Advice

This experience humbles you because you really have to be willing to work hard and hustle., even with knowing you are not guaranteed a tip from your table. You deal with all different types of people and personality types, so it teaches you how to communicate and cater to your customer's needs.

If you would like to try something different, ask your manager. The worst thing they can say is no.
