I wish the shifts were not 12 hours and that there would be transportation to the hospital for students without cars.

Advice

I would recommend this experience for anyone pursuing a career in healthcare, but please advocate for yourself if you are a student as it is very demanding job on top of coursework.

Wish ScribeAmerica could post their training schedule since I missed the June one and had to wait a month to attend the July training session.

Advice

Try to get through training as soon as possible in order to gain as much clinical documenting experience / time. The experience is quite meaningful!

What I liked

I worked as a scribe at two emergency room locations in Dallas. One of them is a Level 1 trauma center, so it could provide the highest level of trauma care to the most serious cases. It was an incredible experience as a pre-med student to see emergency doctors and nurses in action, and see a wide variety of patients and unique clinical cases. I learned how to use the charting program Epic, complete about 15-20 charts per shift while still keeping up with the doctor, how to navigate a hospital, and different steps in the process from triaging a patient to discharge. In the process, I amassed a great vocabulary and learned about common medications as well. Overall, it was invaluable to have gained this level of exposure before even getting to medical school. Plus, the doctors were great to work with. I worked with a doctor multiple times and he agreed to write a letter of recommendation for me!

What I wish was different

Since I worked at emergency rooms, I worked shifts; these were usually around 8 hours and so they were difficult, especially those that ended at night (I usually had classes in the morning). However, you can choose your availabilities each month and will only be assigned shifts in that availability. Also, as time went on and I got faster, I could get out early after finishing all my charts. Also, I think the pay could have been higher for the amount of work and time I dedicated to the job.

Advice

If you plan to attend medical school, nursing school, a PA program, or anything in the clinical field- you should apply for this job! The first-hand experience you gain is amazing, and will of course look great on a resume and in med school interviews. It will be nerve-wracking your first several shifts, and it is definitely a steep learning curve at the beginning. But once you get used to it, you get so much better and it is very fulfilling. Be reminded though- if you scribe in an emergency room, you will need to be able to handle some intense sights, smells, etc. The vast majority of patient cases are routine, but at some point you will see trauma, blood, and/or witness a patient die. Nonetheless, if you want to go into the medical field, it is best if you learn to handle these things.

What I liked

The physicians and my co-workers in the hospital. The experiences were good as well in the medical setting, and I did increase my understanding of medical terminology and the emergency medical record.

What I wish was different

The communications are horrible. There is no transparency when trying to find answers to any problems that you may have, and many people are vague and just beat around the bush instead of being honest and saying "I don't know." But honestly, that is the corporate medical world. Turnover is extremely high especially amongst the management positions at corporate. You always have a new person in charge with limited experience, and they come in without introductions and start criticizing your team and it becomes a mess.

Advice

Honestly, I would not go back, and I would suggest for someone wanting to scribe to look for opportunities from smaller companies or from local doctor's offices trying to hire scribes. Companies like this exploit pre-health students by providing extremely low wages while overcharging hospitals for their services. Trust me, your mental health will be saved by taking this advice. As shifts progressed throughout the pandemic, the workload increased immensely. I wish they had more options for 2 scribes to come into work to split the charting.

Advice

I would say focus on being thorough rather than being quick. Part of the due diligence of patient care is documenting every detail for them.

I enjoyed working with the staff and training was straightforward. A good introductory experience into the medical field. Flexible work hours.

I would have enjoyed more communication amongst those we worked with, but I enjoyed the option to work remotely and gain experience over the pandemic.

Learn your medical terminology! It will help a lot and avoid delays when you have to look terms up,

Advice

It’s a good place to get a foot in the door in the medical field. You can get great recommendation letters. Not a good forever job, though. Salary is okay but you do a lot and don’t get paid much. Sometimes had to work through lunch breaks depending on if the doctor is on time or running behind (which happens a lot in pediatrics).

If you’re looking to gain a ton of knowledge just based on how an emergency department works and what a doctor/ PA/ nurse does on a regular basis this is a great job for you. I came back to school this semester knowing so much more about the field I would like to go into than I could have imagined before I started.

What I liked

I loved working side-by-side with the physicians. I got to see stuff in the emergency department that I never would have dreamed of seeing. I learned so many new things and met tons of amazing people. I enjoyed getting insight regarding how the emergency department works, how physicians make their medical decision making, and learning about some of the ancillary testing.

What I wish was different

There are several things that I wish could have been different but I will only go over the most pertinent ones.. First of all, the management was terrible. They were extremely unprofessional and even rude at times. Now, I worked there for two years, and one of the chief scribes had only been there for 3 months! This is not an issue for me, only how she handled certain situations and went about things. I was a full time college student and had to work another job to support myself. They did not care about me or how I felt about anything. This is what ultimately led me to quit. The district manager was pretty much non-existent, so the only people you could talk to if you needed support were from the chief scribes. Their lack of communication of certain things (like when to have your schedule in) made it so much more difficult to work for them. It seemed like every week they changed certain rules and made it impossible for me to work there. The pay is awful, the base pay is $10/hr after your 90 day probationary period. I only made more because I had to apply for a raise after meeting certain qualifications. If you work to support yourself, then this is not an ideal job for you. I had to work another job on top of going to school full time to support myself. There is an extremely high turnover rate. I constantly had to fix other scribes mistakes. Now I don't think this was their fault, rather the training was very inconsistent and some of the physicians were difficult to work with. The chief scribes at that time did not implement a decent training regiment which I believe led to our high turn over rate.

Advice

Be patient and try to understand. At first it is quite overwhelming; the environment of the emergency department can be overwhelming, and some physicians have a tendency to be impatient. Give yourself time and it will all work out! For a while I felt inadequate, but once you get a routine going that works, then you will be an amazing scribe!

What I wish was different

Working long shifts for such a low wage can get overwhelming easily, especially while in school.

Advice

If you're on the pre-PA track, this job might not be the best way to get clinical experience because not all PA schools accept scribing hours.

What I liked

I learned a lot while also getting a firsthand experience of the atmosphere within the Emergency Department.

What I wish was different

I would have liked more communication regarding my work hours. I was told that if I took more hours one month then I could take less shifts the following months. This did not happen, which made it difficult for me to continue my Scribe work as I had other responsibilities and spent extra time the month prior in hopes that I would have a more manageable schedule as alluded to by the Chief Scribe.

Advice

It is a great first job experience that teaches you great medical terminology while exposing you to the ER. This position helped improve my typing skills as well as my knowledge, which makes it a great learning opportunity while also thrusting newfound responsibility.
