Student Painters

Management internship

February 2019 • Cincinnati, OH

What I liked

This company puts an incredible amount of trust in its branch managers and encourages them to work hard and put in the effort because it will pay off in the end. This has been a life-altering experience that has paid dividends for my future.

What I wish was different

There is a time commitment to this internship, but if you put in the work the results are fantastic.

Advice

The best experiences come from the managers who understand what it takes to be successful.

Exterior House Painter

May - August 2019 • Amherst, OH

What I liked

I liked building a team mentality with my coworkers and sharing our experiences with each other.

What I wish was different

The team was very mismanaged with a few bad employees that made my job a lot harder due to their bad work ethic. The work hours were sometimes 10+ with minimal breaks in the sweltering summer sun with no readily available bathroom or water source. If you did not bring your own water and knew where the nearest gas station was, you had no access to these essentials. The estimated time to complete jobs was so short that I was often pressured to complete jobs in order to keep my pay as stated. The idea of getting paid on efficiency, how fast you can complete jobs based on the estimated time, was frightening. Not completing jobs fast enough meant not getting paid for the full number of hours that I worked.

Advice

This job is very labor heavy and we should get paid a lot more for the amount of intense physical labor required and risk of safety in some situations.

Site Manager

May - August 2019 • Dayton, OH

What I liked

I enjoyed learning how to manage my teams resources when on the job site and off. The work was very rewarding and I loved seeing the homeowners being happy with the work we did for them. My paint crew consisted of my buddies from high school so the employee relationship was already good.

What I wish was different

I would have liked to receive a higher hourly pay for the work, but the experience was still one I would do again.

Advice

This experience is a good way to get used to a full work week of manual labor. Painting houses is a different process for each client, so you must be ready to be adaptable for any situation. In addition to being ready to do the work, you must also be ready to speak constantly with your client to make sure you are on the same page while the job is being completed.

Senior Executive

October 2017 • Boston, MA

What I liked

This internship is for the most motivated and success driven college students who are seeking to separate themselves from their peer groups and take the first big step to building the strongest resume possible at their peer group. After two years with this company I can confidently say that I have the most incredible stories that I can bring with me wherever I go, and the intangible experiences that I earned from running over $300,000 of business over two years. I wouldn't trade my experiences for anything. The financial freedom you also attain from this internship is more than any other person at the age group, and is helping me completely pay for college.

What I wish was different

Nothing

Advice

Be prepared to work harder than you've ever worked, as starting your own full scale business takes a lo of effort and extreme ownership.

Bank Branch Manager

December 2018 • Grosse Pointe, MI

What I liked

This has been a great summer internship to build connections with like-minded college students looking to get involved with business. I had a lot of fun running my own painting branch and learning the in's and out's of running a company while improving my leadership and organizational skills.

What I wish was different

Something I wish I had done better was open my branch sooner to get more jobs in and create more revenue for myself.

Advice

Be ready to have fun but don't forget this is an internship! It take a lot of hard work and grit to run your first business but it's all worth it in the end!

Manager

February - August 2019 • Celina, OH

What I liked

The company culture and the atmosphere at company events.

What I wish was different

I wish I had done more marketing and built a better crew so i could have made more money.

Hire a marketing team early on and use them as much as possible. Then higher as many painters as possible. If you try to do it all yourself like i did you will not make as much money.

Branch Manager

October 2018 - August 2019 • Mason, OH

What I liked

You will learn more about yourself in a summer with YEAA than you will anywhere else. Are you a quitter? Do you have good time management skills? Are you able to give direction to a group of individuals and properly manage them? You will learn the answer to these questions and more. I genuinely believe you are making a mistake by not seizing this opportunity and making the most out of it. This internship is a foundation to the rest of your career in business and you will gain so much hands on experience that you wouldn't get from any other internship being offered.

What I wish was different

Advice

Push yourself to the very end. It's easy to quit but the benefits far outweigh the negatives when you give it your all.

Project Manager

June - August 2018 • Athol, MA

What I liked

I created great friendships with my employees, they were always on time and listening to what I asked then to do.

What I wish was different

The only thing I wish was different was communication with my boss, he wasn't always answering the phone when a problem I couldn't deal with on my own.

Advice

I would definitely recommend this job for anyone who is undecided on what they would like to do for the summer.

Student painter

May - August 2018 • Delaware, OH

What I liked

I liked working with my team. Once we got the hang of things, we really worked well together.

What I wish was different

I wish we could have been taught more on how to be more efficient. The goal of every job was how efficient we could be and I feel we weren’t taught painting or cleaning tips to help with that.

Advice

Keep an open mind when job hunting. I never thought I’d work a manual labor job but it turned out to be a great experience and pushed me out of my comfort zone.

Entrepreneur

February - August 2018 • Midland, MI

What I liked

I learned a lot about so many different things in this field, as well as how to interact with different people. This internship gave me an insight into the pros and cons of being an entrepreneur.

What I wish was different

I wish the business I ran would have been something I was more educated in.

Advice

If you are planning to take on this opportunity, stay organized and always have your goals in mind, it's easy to give up if you don't have stamina.
