Front Counter Worker

What I liked

It was a very difficult job for me, but I think that was what I liked. Tatte was a very fast-paced environment due to its location in a busy area D.C., and equipment was constantly malfunctioning. When I was working there, I hated both of these things because they made my job much more difficult. However, looking back I think that I most appreciate these aspects of the job because it made me a much stronger employee. I was forced to learn how to adapt to unexpected situations while under pressure and come up with the best solution to minimize the effect of the situation on the customer's experience. I was also appointed to a leadership position, which placed even more pressure on me to think about not only how I would adapt to unexpected situations, but also how I would delegate tasks to my coworkers to find and execute a solution, as well.

What I wish was different

One of the managers that I worked for tended to project her emotions onto employees at times. I wish that this were different because it made me feel that I wasn't doing a good job as an employee, even though her frustrations were typically unrelated to my performance. I think that this taught me to remain calm and not doubt myself when people project their frustrations onto me, however, I do wish that this had been difference during my time at Tatte.

Advice

When I first started working here it was hard for me to pick up all of the information and skills that were needed to execute my job well. The first week was a rough learning curve for me and it was really discouraging. However, I quickly learned from my mistakes and eventually, I was appointed to a leadership position. My advice from this experience would be to always have faith in yourself even if you have a rocky start to your job. Try your best to learn from your mistakes and always have confidence because that is the only way to do well. If you learn to adapt to the environment faster and learn to be more efficient than others, you will excel and might even be promoted.
