Walmart & Sam's Club

Cashier

May 2017 • Tempe, AZ

What I liked

All the coworkers are very friendly and I never have to think about work outside of work, which is really nice when in school.

What I wish was different

The managers run the whole front end of the store, so it’s frequently difficult to find them when you or a customer need help.

Advice

Always be your best self and friendly with the customers, and you’ll rarely get an angry customer.

Associate

February - September 2018 • Greendale, WI

What I liked

There were very supportive and understanding supervisors who were willing to accommodate you and be flexible. It was a friendly work environment who made sure you received sufficient training before heading into your specific job.

What I wish was different

The hour long lunch breaks were a blessing and a curse. While they provided a nice relaxing lunch, you would be slotted for 9 hour days (given that you would take an hour long lunch). Personally, I would've liked to be slotted for an 8 hour day, and have a 30 minute lunch.

Advice

Communicate with your supervisors and co-workers, and make as many friends as possible.

Pricing Strategy

June - August 2017 • Bentonville, AR

What I liked

Paid housing, paid internship, fun activities all interns lived in suite hotels together.

What I wish was different

I am more of a city person and the area is a little smaller for my taste

Advice

Ask questions, there will be a lot of information you don't understand, so don't be afraid to ask.

Cashier

May - August 2018 • Grand Junction, CO

What I liked

I loved being able to gain more customer service experience and interact with the public.

What I wish was different

I wish I didn't HAVE to take an hour for lunch because I would've been more productive and less tired had it been 30 minutes. I know it is weird, but that is my personal experience/opinion.

Advice

To work with the public, know how to control your feelings and be as polite as can be in any situation, but don't be a pushover.

Supply Chain Management Intern

May - August 2019 • Fort Worth, TX

What I liked

- I got flown out to Bentonville, AK (Walmart HQ) to attend their biggest event of the year, Shareholders Week. Then they flew all the interns to Dallas and we had an "Intern Collaboration Week". All expenses paid. - The pay was excellent. Very very good pay for an intern. Highest pay I have ever seen for an internship position ever. - Internal network opportunities

What I wish was different

- I wish my team at my site was more organized and proactive. My mentor resigned during my internship and my internship project was given no attention or importance to. - Severely behind technologically compared to Amazon

Advice

Research about companies before joining because although the pay may be an incentive, the company culture, and environment matters more if you'd like to be a part of the organization or team for the long-run. This place was not fun for me and I doubt it'd be for you unless you like chaos and disorganization.

Sales Associate

June 2019 • Farmville, VA

What I liked

I like the team experience at Walmart, always feeling like you're making a difference by assisting customers with their shopping by providing them information on a variety of products and supplying/arranging products to provide a convenient experience for the customers and your coworkers.

What I wish was different

I wish the schedules were more consistent and I had more time to communicate with my managers.

Corporate Financial Analyst

June - August 2019 • Bentonville, AR

What I liked

Walmart fosters a culture that enabled me to meet with dozens of people in varying parts of the company with varying levels of experience. I got to learn from so many talented individuals. Everyone I spoke to was open to taking time out of their day to help me be successful. My projects were meaningful and still create value for the team I interned on.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had the opportunity to work on team projects. This would have provided the chance to receive more feedback and coaching. I would often be asked to work on projects that would require me to produce financial models that I wasn't familiar with. I was apprehensive that my work wasn't suitable or up to par becuase of my lack of experience in the industry.

Advice

I have two pieces of advice about this experience: First, be curious. Always. Ask questions, seek to understand. Don't assume that everything is right the way it is. If something looks off, seek to understand why and be courageous enough to offer input. Second, if you're given a lot of autonomy, own it. Show people that you are dependable. Be creative in your work and show your team how it can provide value. There is rarely one right answer or one right way to create a model.

Customer Host

May - August 2019 • Etters, PA

What I liked

The managers there were very kind and flexible. They helped work around my schedule and they gave me a fair pay.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had a different role in the company, as I thought that there was not much to do. Perhaps asking for more work would have helped.

Advice

If you’re able to complete mundane tasks without any problems then this is for you. But otherwise, probably not.
