What I liked

Having worked at Walmart for more than two years, I love interacting with people from various backgrounds while checking them out at the register. Not only have I worked register, I received partial experience at the customer service desk assisting customers with their product returns since it can be a time-consuming process.

What I wish was different

The fact that there are thousands of Walmart stores internationally, the stores that are located in the United States need to be more efficient in terms of management. Last year, I attended university in North Carolina and worked at nearby Walmart and the customers and fellow employees were incredibly humble and kind. Southern hospitality is a real thing in the south!

Advice

I understand that Walmart has ton of negative reviews in terms of quality of products and overall customer service. However, the one piece of advice I would like to share about my experience working at Walmart is that there is a lot of potential to grow within the company and not just viewed as a regular part-time job for the majority of people. In addition, Walmart is a VERY diverse place to work at. I understand that Loyola is all about diversity on campus, however, since the racial demographics at Loyola University Maryland is on average (between students and faculty) are 73% white, I observed much more diversity in Walmart than I did at Loyola while I attended the university. I have seen ALL different kinds of backgrounds and have had the pleasure of getting to know who they are and what their purpose in life is.

Personal shopper

August 2014 - September 2019 • Edmond, OK

What I liked

The constant movement, we didn’t stand in one place for hours

What I wish was different

Time off requests. Sometimes emergencies would happen, and I’d need some emergency time off, and they would make me find someone to cover or take an attendance point if I didn’t put in a request 2 weeks prior.

Advice

Learn patience, customers aren’t always the smartest or kindest.

Fresh Associate

May 2019 • Surprise, AZ

What I liked

The hours were nice. Management kept the team on track and never felt overbearing. My coworkers made transferring to Walmart Flagstaff a hard thing to go through with as they quickly became friends of mine while working there.

What I wish was different

It bugs me that to afford school I have to work full-time for a company which has nothing to do with my major. It seems like I'm falling behind other student in my major who have the time for internships.

Advice

Never sell yourself short. All jobs need doing and so long as you show up on time and work hard you'll find staying employed is easy. Just remember nothing is below you.

Morning Baker

June - August 2019 • Colonial Heights, VA

What I liked

I liked that I was able to use what I learned in school and apply it to my first job within my major.
