YMCA

Camp Counselor

June - August 2019 • Avon, OH

What I liked

Being a camp counselor at the Ymca was a wonderful experience. I loved working with kids of all ages and getting to know them. I was able to watch the kids grow and learn as the summer went on. They were excited each day and it was definitely a great learning experience.

What I wish was different

Spending more time getting to know the children who needed more attention in the beginning of summer would have helped those kids create better friendships with others.

Advice

Getting to know each individual child is important because they are all so different. Teaching them the core values of the Ymca; caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility was not as difficult as you would think. The children are all so different and many of them have created such great friendships and memories. In any type of job working with children, it is very important to get to know each individual.

Summer Camp Director

May 2018 • Everett, WA

What I liked

I loved being able to plan activities and then take children on field trips. I planned trips to the zoo, aquarium, parks, lakes/splash pads/aquatic centers, roller skating, rock climbing, and many more activities. The joy children display when they learn new skills and facts makes working with them that much better!

What I wish was different

I wish we had smaller group ratio's so the children had more one on one time with the children.

Advice

Remember that all children are learning and they learn at their own pace.

Summer camp counselor

June - August 2019 • Hannibal, MO

What I liked

I loved working with kids. They are cute, funny, sweet little people. It was honestly the best summer I’ve ever had.

What I wish was different

Sometimes it was a little disorganized with us not getting our work schedule until the last minute or getting daily schedules late.

Advice

Start every day fresh. Don’t bring in negative emotions. The kids will think you are like that because of them, and they don’t deserve that.
